Advanced French Fighters vs 1942/1943 contemporaries

Goes without saying - any additional info about the 14R would've been appreciated. It is one the most misunderstood engine designs of ww2.

"Jumo 222" and "DB 606/610" made in H16 form instead of being 24 cyl types - what gives?

There is not enough of historical records about the H16 to begin with. One H16 that made it to a meager production numbers is the too small a sample, especially when compared with the V12s or R14s that were made by many companies and in many thousands. We can recall that Napier Dagger was in the...

"Jumo 222" and "DB 606/610" made in H16 form instead of being 24 cyl types - what gives?

I'm okay with people not throwing themselves in support of my ideas. And Good knows I've had loads of them in the last 20 years of being a member of different forums. Definitely something for the engineers to work on. IIRC @Shortround6 was not a fan when I've tried to pitch them years ago ;)

Advanced French Fighters vs 1942/1943 contemporaries

In 1940, there was no low altitude V-1710. If we're playing the finger pointing game, the V-1710 was a troublesome engine from the late 1940 to mid 1941, troublesome enough to be down-rated by some 10%. Thus being no better than the HS 12Y-49, while being heavier and without the motor cannon...

Advanced French Fighters vs 1942/1943 contemporaries

Merlin is a superior engine in all aspects - timing, being debugged, and making better power. I'm not sure how come the R-2600 became a fighter engine after 10-15 years of convincing us that it is bad in that role.

"Jumo 222" and "DB 606/610" made in H16 form instead of being 24 cyl types - what gives?

There is certainly no guarantee. However, this is a what-if scenario, and like most if not all such scenarios, there are trade-offs in play. My cunning idea is that German mass-produced engines were already with the worse power-to-weight ratio than the Western or Japanese types, so achieving...

Italian series 5/6 fighters really better?

Drop tanks were very rare on the Italian ww2 fighters.

Italian series 5/6 fighters really better?

Fw 190 was probably the fastest of the lot, with MC.205 and 109G-4 being close (and probably faster once the DB 605 engines were fully rated). Lighter weight of the Italian fighters made them climb well when compared with the Fw 190. Big wings of the Re.2005 and G.55 were providing lower wing...

The Hs 129 idea done 'right', and for everyone

BMW 139 have had all three bearings between the crank throws - yes, no usual front and end bearings as one can expect it on a radial engine. We sometimes criticize the German engineers of being too smart for their own good, and this was one such example. The 801 was a wholesale redesign of the...
