That was the job of the bombardier/navigator, who rode in the nose.

yea, that must have been a hell of a job to keep the mission on course, make sure the bombs went to the target, and above all that take some shots at the enemy fighters. Talk about multi-tasking. haha

yeah, one hell of a job, but they got it done, anyway

Cant agree with you more that stupid Lancaster was the worst bomber ever built... I was watching a show on the history channel (British made) tv program and the show said that the Lancaster was the best bomber evet built in that time era. IT was so good that the British had to bomb at night, b/c they got shot to S*** during the day. The Lancaster sucks

oohhhhhhhhhhhhh, you are so gonna pay for that one golferproB, the lancaster was the greatest bomber of the war easily, 14,000lb bombload, good damage tollerance, manoverable in the hands of a good pilot and most importantly, it's British what were you thinkng

He's thinking about how heavy its losses were, the fact that it had no ventral gun turret (which lack accounted for at least a quarter of its losses), the fact that the plane's escape hatches were poorly placed for easy crew escape, and the fact that Lancaster operations during daylight were indeed suicide for most of the war, until the USAAF had knocked out the Luftwaffe fighter force. I don't care how much it could carry or who built it, the Lancaster had some serious design flaws.

What, the b-17 didn't? and run this by me again, when did the ussaf knock out the luftwaffe? here's me thinking it was us Brit's :fatalfridge:

The Lancaster was a good design, but the Lancaster was designed very differently to the B17.

I was mainly invisaged as a night bomber, plus early in the war, dont forget lancasters where bombing germany while america was still thinking that it was a great idea to put all their ships in one place and wait for the japs to bomb them all in one go, there where no long range fighters able to escort them to germany, so the lack of the belly turret (major design flaw) was pretty terminal for day attack.

I know less about the B17 but i know that they had fighter escorts and came later in the war, so its easy to claim its better than the lancaster when in fact one thing should be remembered in a war.... If it does the job use it....

Anyway the Mosquito was the best bomber of WW2... discuss

wow all this from my first post too :)
