While I was at the NA I was able to look at one of the folders covering the FW190. I am afraid that there are no real unexpected gems in this one. There are the flight trials held between the Fw190, Spit V, Spit IX, Typhoon, P38 and Mustang which have been published before but as far as I can tell, not the complete report, I have only found abreviated versions so will post the entire paper here tomorrow. In the meantime I did copy a couple of papers which might have been of interest..

The first two attachments are the first paper that mentioned the fact that the Fw190 engine was derated. It should be remembered that this aircraft landed by mistake on an RAF airfield, it hadn't been damaged at all and the RAF took every measure to ensure that when it was tested it was in exactly the same configuration as when it landed. There was a paper that I didn't copy which stated that the only items to be removed if found were any demolition charges that might have been.

Clearly the RAF have no idea why an aircraft should go on operations with a derated engine, in particular as the engine was already in use on other aircraft at the higher rating. If anyone has any explanation why the Luftwaffe did this it would be appreciated as it beats me.

The first paper refers to the derated engine.

The second paper looks at an airtest of a second FW 190 that took place in early 1943 as a comparison to the first Fw190..

The third paper refers to requesting that one of the crated FW190 obtained from Italy be passed to the A.F.D.U. Clearly the RAF had access to a number of Fw190 for testing purposes.

Might be an early BMW 801 C that was de-rated by ground crew to fight the overheating problems. Wasn't this a fighter-bomber?

Riacrato
The first plane captured was a standard fighter.

All
The following are the fighter comparison papers that I mentioned earlier.

One inportant addition to the notes on the flying trials. At the start they mention that the Fw190 was derated and that they expected a full rated aircraft to have a higher performance.
An addendum was attached to the trials. The RAF were able to increase the power to max for the tests. The 3 min emergency rating was used for the high speed tests. The following paper gives the details

I've seen these papers a couple of years before (there was a great site by someone who called himself Ring for WW2Online), but its nice to see them again.

AFAIK the German boost limitations for the BMW 801D at the time was indeed 1.35ata, as 1.42ata was not cleared yet due to numerous issues with the BMW powerplant.

The Brits run the a/c at the full 1.42ata rating indeed, but even then for some reason they reached somewhat lower performance than what should be in the specs with the given rating.

Maybe the a/c was sub-par from the production line, or the engine didn't really liked the higher rating.
