Clearing out my fathers shed I came across an old Airfix box for a Hawker Hurricane which I built as a youngster nearly 40 years ago. It had some rusty screws in it and I was about to throw it away when I started looking at the box art. The Hurricane on the box top had one black and one grey wing underside. I thought the artist must have made a mistake till I googled it and came across this site

Which shows a Spitfire in exactly the same colours. My question is what was the thinking behind such an odd and unique colour scheme. It seems to have not been very succesful because it was only used for a short time I have never seen a photograph of its use during the Battle of Britain.
