Blaming the volcano for the Admiral ignoring the RDF beacon bearings - the testing of which was a major part of the reason they were conducting the exercise - is like blaming the song on the radio for you deciding to drive the wrong way on the freeway.

Funny you should say that, my colleague in Mulheim set off for Dusseldorf, put Christine Aguilera on the CD player and ended up in Venlo (Netherlands). I know because I was sat next to him. I just wanted to know how long he would go before he realised he should be going to work instead of buying spliff.

They were still picking up parts from those ships off the beaches when I was stationed at Vandenberg AFB in the 1980's.
The flotilla commander was desperate to set a new record for SFO to San Diego and thus turned Left as early as possible.
I have driven down the 101 freeway from VAFB and been greatly bothered by the glare from the Sun rising in the East over the Pacific. The degree to which that shoreline is angled E-W is often not appreciated.
