Project Aphrodite was a WWII USAAF program to take war weary B-17's and convert them into radio controlled drones that could be dived into high value targets, such as sub pens and V-weapons storage sites. They rigged up a control system based on two Azon (Azimuth only) guided bomb control systems, one set up for left and right and one for up and down. The Aphrodite missile B-17's were stripped of everything not needed for the mission, loaded with tons of explosives, and took off under the control of a pilot and a flight engineer. Once the bomber missile was up and level the two men switched it over to radio control and bailed out while still over Great Britain. Another B-17 served as the control aircraft and the operator looking out through the nose maneuvered the missile B-17 to take it to the target and dive it in.

There were many problems, not the least of which was that B-17's were not designed to dive well, and they never had a successful mission. But on one mission they flew almost all the way to the target, only to lose control of the missile B-17, which belly landed in a field in France.

The next day they sent fighters to that location to strafe and destroy the B-17 but could not find anything in that area but a gravel pit. It was only after the Allies overran that area of France that they found out what had occurred. The local French reported that German troops surrounded the bomber and ordered the crew to come out. When the crew did not appear the Germans pried open the door in the aft fuselage and stormed in to capture the crew. The French said the next thing was an enormous explosion.

And all that was left was a gravel pit.

I was wondering where MIflyer was going with "nothing but a gravel pit", but he delivered.

The eldest Kennedy brother was killed flying one of the Aphrodite Project B-17s (corrected). He was the brother being groomed for politics (in particular), which then passed to JFK after his death.

No, the USN had its own program with the same idea and objectives; the USAAF did give them some badly needed support once they got to the ETO . They used B-24's instead of B-17's as missiles and they were configured differently. The USN had a real aircraft radio control system rather than the jury rigged system the USAAF used and rather than the operator looking out the nose of a B-17 using visual contact to fly the missile, the USN had PV-1's which used an actual TV guidance system looking out front of the B-24 missile.

Neither program was successful in achieving its objectives, but other than those German troops who tried to capture that B-17 and perhaps a German AA battery that set one off less than 1000 ft over their heads, the USAAF never killed anyone. The USN B-24 missile had a deeply flawed explosive arming system, and they devised an inadequate fix for it. The pilot had to arm the system before he bailed out and apparently when Joe Kennedy did so the aircraft exploded. His USAAF flight engineer had already bailed out successfully.

The book "Aphrodite: Desperate Mission" tells the story of these efforts. When JFK became President there were people who were terrified of the thought of telling him what really happened to his brother.

JFK actually had to fight to get into the Navy, as his back was significantly injured playing college sports: he had to appeal a 4F classification.

A bit of a contrast to today's warmongering chickenhawks.
