Dave McCampbell was CV-7's LSO. Among other things he brought a Canadian Spitfire pilot aboard (obviously without a tailhook) on a Malta run. Fly Lt Jerry Smith was MIA shortly thereafter. I was able to introduce Dave to Smith's brother Rod (a Malta and NW Europe ace) because I was the only one attending the event who knew both!
Dave had been a champion diver at Annapolis. He said that he thought if his ship were sunk "I might do a layout or a pike. But when I looked down, I grabbed my nose with one hand, the rest of me with the other hand, and went in feet first!"
