A beaver in our neighborhood has done this twice now, he starts to take a tree down, but instead of falling the tree gets hung up in other trees, so the beaver keeps taking chunks off trying to drop the tree. He eventually will succeed, last time it took him 8 chunks before the remaining tree fell.
