Avro Lancaster B.Mk.II

Shown here is Lancaster B.Mk.II, A2-L, (LL678), of No.514 sqd, runnning up her inners at Waterbeach.
Couple of questions here, why did they fit the Lancaster MkII with Bristol Hercules radial engines, was it in case Merlin production was tight or something? Also, didn't they trial a HP Halifax with Merlin engines, was the any specific reason why they did this?
