Northrop N-3PB Nomad

Shown here is a N-3PB Nomad in Norwegian markings about to take-off on a test flight from Lake Elsinor, California. On the fall of Norway in 1940 these aircraft were taken over by the British and used by a single RAF Coastal Command squadron.
In 1940 the Norwegian purchasing commission ordered 24 Northrop N-3PB seaplanes. Completed in just eight months the first prototype took to the air on 1 November 1940 and achieved, in trials, a speed of 257 mph making a claim to be the worlds fastest military seaplane. They were operated by the RAF's No.330 (Norwegian) squadron based in Iceland for 19 months during 1941-1942 before being replaced by Catalinas. A number were lost in landing accidents, but none through enemy action.
