Squadron Commander Dunning lands his Sopwith Pup on HMS Furious' foredeck, 2 August 1917. the Pup is virtually hovering, and ship's offciers are racing to haul it down to the deck.
Sadly, on a third attempt later that day Dunning lost his life. He was flying from Smoogroo on Orkney Island. Dunning was Squadron commander of the flying element stationed aboard Furious. This was 'F' Squadron, nominally based at RNAS East Fortune. Note the red white and blue striping on the elevators; this was applied to aircraft built by the Beardmore ship builders at Dalmuir on the Clyde.
