Heinkel III

Heinkel 111, copyright RAF Museum Hendon
This was the second of the standard light-bombers of the Luftwaffe in service that year. The prototype flew in February 1935 and it went on to see service in Spain and Poland. This aircraft, together with the Do17 provided the backbone of the daylight bombing strength of the Luftwaffe. It was armed with 4 to 8 machine guns and had a bomb load of 4410lbs. However, with a top speed of 270mph it was too slow against the fighters.
