Derived from the earlier Ilyushin DB-3 (the second prototype of which had amazed the world by making a record breaking 4,971 mile trip from Moscow to Canada) the Il-4 served in great numbers with the Soviet Air Forces throughout the Second World War. It carried out the first Soviet raid on Berlin (8/9 August 1941) and remained in service into the 1950s.
