In Italian service the SM 81 served both as a bomber and a transport. In the latter role aircraft of the 37 Stormo took part in the 1939 invasion of Albania; dubbed Lumace (Slugs) on account of their slow speed, they also took part in the Axis evacuation of Tunisia in 1943.
