Shown here is the Type IXC submarine U-156, commanded by Kapitanleutnant Werner Hartenstein, with her decks crowded with survivors from his sinking of the liner laconia in September 1942. Hartenstein organised a rescue operation with three other U-boats and an Italian submarine, only to be attacked by an American aircraft during the attempt.
