This photo is one of a series taken on 10 May 1945 from Liberator GR Mk VIII (KK416) of No.56 Squadron, flown by Flight Lieutenant R. C. Penning, and based at Ballykelly, Northern Ireland. It shows the Type VIIC/41 boat U-293 flying the black flag of surrender, which had been photographed from Liberator GR Mk.VIII (KK294) earlier in the day. U-293 docked at Loch Ailish, Scotland the following day. it was used for target practice by the RAF and finally destroyed by naval gunfire on 13 December 1945. Ref: AIR 15/142
