Shown here is the Type VIIC/41 boat U-317 as seen from an RAF Liberator. U-317 left Egersund on 21 June 1944 for its first patrol, under the command of Oberleuntnant der Reserve Peter Rahlff. On 26 June North-East of the Shetlands, it was attcked by Liberator G.R.Mk.111 (FL916), flown by Flight Lieutenant Geoffrey W.T.Parker, of No. 86 Sqd., from Tain, Ross-Shire, Scotland. Two sticks of depth charges were dropped in separate attacks and in the second attack the U-boat rolled over and sank. Men were seen in the water but there were no survivors. The Liberator was hit by return fire but Parker managed to alnd safely at Stornoway in the Hebrides. Ref: AIR15/472
