Shown here is U-596 entering La Spezia on 12 March 1943. The camouflage pattern, designed to break up the boat's silhouette, was one peculiar to mediterranean U-boats and was made by dark grey patterning over the familiar light grey used by the Kriegsmarine. Note the old Italian light cruiser Taranto (ex-German) in the background.
