U-601 left Hammerfest, Norway on 14 February 1944 for an eleventh war cruise under the command of Kapitanleutnant Otto Hansen. It was attacked on 25 february 1944 about 250 miles west of the North Cape by Catalina (M) of No.210 Sqd, flown from Sullon Voe, Shetlands by Squadron Leader Frank J. French. The U-boat fired on the Catalina, which attacked towards its starboard quarter. The Catalina dropped two depth charges and then circled, seeing survivors in the water. Visibility was then lost in a snowstorm. All fifty-one men onboard lost their lives. Ref: AIR15/472
