Shown here is the Type VIIC boat U-743 under attack north-east of the Shetlands by Liberator G.R.Mk.III (FK231) of No.86 Sqd. flown from Tain, Ross-Shire by Flying Officer E.D. Moffit (RAAF). Three attacks were made and eight depth charges were dropped, while gunfire was exchanged. U-743 had left Kiel on 15 June 1944 for its first patrol, under the command of Oberleutnant zur See Helmut Kandizor, and was so badly damaged that it had to put into Bergen. After repair, it left on 21 August but was sunknmon 9 September by the frigate HMS Helmsdale and the corvette HMS Portchester Castle, with the loss of all fifty crew members. Ref: AIR 15/472
