Unknown U-boat 2

At 1014 hours on 7 May 1943 Whitley G.R.Mk.VII (BD680) of No.612 Sqd, flown by Warrant Officer G.F. McFarlane, from Davidstow Moor, Cornwall, was at 3,500 feet near Cape Ortegal on the north-west tip of Spain when a fully surfaced U-boat was spotted. McFarlane dived steeply and released a stick of six depth charges. One of these hung up but the remainder fell near the starboard bow of the U-boat. Another attack was made but the depth charges did not release since the bomb distributor was set incorrectly. The pliot was unaware of this and made an attack with machine-guns, but the U-boat dived and nothing further was seen. There is no record of any sinking. Ref: CN 1/39
