USCGC Spencer

The Type IXC boat U-175 left Lorient on 10 April 1943 for its third war cruise under the command of Korvettenkapitan Heinrich Bruns. On 17 April when west-south-west of Eire and in contact with a convoy, it was located with HF/DF by the coastguard cutter USCGC Spencer. Depth charges brought it to the surface, and it came under gunfire before sinking. Thirteen men were killed, including Bruns, but fort-0ne survivors were rescued by the cutters Spencer and Duane. The photo shows depth charges from Spencer exploding before bringing the U-175 to the surface.
