Shown here is the USS Blakeley (DD-150) in the Caribbean with her bow blown off after being hit by a torpedo from a German U-boat. Her damage control men plugged up the holes, shored up bulkheads, and built so sort of temporary bow across. Then she steamed 1,000 miles back to the United States for ner new permanent bow.
