USS Robert I. Paine

Shown here is the destroyer escort USS Robert I. Paine (DE-578) underway circa May 1945. The gunnery lay-out has been consderably altered for Pacific service where AA fire had priority. Four single Army 40 mm Bofors have been added in place of the torpedo tubes, and the full previous close-range armament of one quad 1.1" gun and ten 20 mm Oerlikons retained. A tripod mainmast has been added. The standard SG (surface) radar aerial in its perspex dome and the SL (air) radar aerial at the fore masthead can be seen (USN).
