I got this response to my article on FaceBook yesterday;;;
David Lee Chuck, before I start I would like to let you know that I highly appreciate and respect the effort that you put into finding out the history behind the Mustang 44-72028 that your late father flew, a man that I respect...
72028 was part of the 6,600 P-51D’s built at North American’s Inglewood, CA plant. It was built under USAAF contract # AC2378 with North American build # 122-31887. 72028 was finished and accepted by the AAF on 27-Dec-1944. It was delivered to Long Beach, CA on 29-Dec-1944 to be deployed to...
Hey Jester.....are you finished with the microfilms? I have another person that wants to view them....her dad was in the 40th too! He was in since 1943 and probablly knew your Grandfather. His last name was Morgan. Anyway she would like to see the films too....let me know when you can return...
Jester....it could have been NMF or OD/grey. In the press of war painting or unpainting all the squadrons A/C to be the same is low on the priority list. I don't know if one A/C was written off if the replacement A/C could use the written off squadron number....I don't know why not but I can't...
So Justin....do you have an A/C # for your airplane? What was it again? A P-39? I am doing some data mining now on the 40th and if I know what type and # you are looking for I might stumble across it. I found a bunch of P-51 pics of the 40th this week....Korea time but a few P-39's that are...
Hi again....glad the films are working out for you. To answer your question there is no coralation with the serial # and A/C #. My Dad's A/C was 159 and the serial was 44-72028. I'll check my Dads log books and see if he listed serial # or A/C #.....I don't remember that.
Justin,
All I built was 1/72....and the last group I did was early 90's I think, I built 8 F-105's. There are a lot of paints and processes that have come available since the 90's....I don't know what people now use for silver. As I said, all I used was Floquil Railroad paints....they sold a...
I shot the red and white first. I used only Floquil RR paint, not Polly S. Masked whole cowl and drew design on the tape in pencil, then cut it with a #11 xacto. I use the scotch opaque tape, 3/4 wide. The pencil design on the tape first, allowed me to balance it and make the arcs the same...
Here are some pics I took today of two models I kept....my Dad's a/c and a Jug from the 40th. I also had a 102, A-7D, F-86D tha I had in 40th markings....they went to CAP in Richmond.
Hi Justin,
I have the material ready to ship. I’ll be sending it priority USPS.
I am including 4 microfilms and the only book I can find from my stuff that I didn’t ebay. It’s a book called Pacific Sweep published in Australia....I’m not sure of the date, I think it was censored out...
Justin,
I'll email you Sunday and we can exchange information....we show cars on the weekend so we are busy....unless it rains....which it might. In any event I'll gather up what I have and send it to you....it needs someone more motivated than I am right now to do the digging....you might be...
mhuxt....it's 44-72028....I think! The 2 is obscured by the blue vertical stripe on the rudder....My Dad said it was 72028 but I don't have photographic proof....yet. Centerline holdings is indeed in DE....I sent a snail mail letter last year to the address and it came back....no one there! I...
Justin,
Do you have access to a 16mm microfilm reader....usually large public libraries have one or more of them. I have some microfilm of the 40th daily stats I got from Maxwell AFB years ago....with images of daily frag boards and other information.....and some pictures of airplanes. It's...
