So, just spit-balling here, but the “finished edge” area I’ve circled looks like a cut-out where a gun might have protruded. Could it possibly be a turret cover of some sort? USAAF perhaps from the zinc chromate/OD paint? Hopefully someone can figure it out - Good luck.

Allan .... almost done with my box .... just noticed on one other I saw on-line that the “Delicate Instruments...” stencil also appeared on the back of the box. Yours does not appear to have that - have you seen any others that DO? John

Thank you Allan. So to clarify ..... looking down at the closed box I would see a square measuring 7 1/8 inches on a side? .... And is the total height ... looking at the closed box from the side ... 4 1/8 (top half) + 2 3/8 (bottom half) ... = 6 1/2 inches? And can you give me the basic...
