Effectiveness of light aircraft cannons against ships

It's HE shell, completely different case. Also, if possible, can you post some links about expected Hispano HE damage? Damage you listed looks too high, from my perspective. p.s. coasters/fishing boats, and smaller escort(or coastal) combatants out of question - .50 was used in this role...

Effectiveness of light aircraft cannons against ships

Ship hulls(i mean notable warships) are made from quite thick high-tension steel. So-only small hole, and very few energy even in case of penetration. But yes, it's enough for smaller warships(i mentioned HMS Comus yearlier, though it was 23mm fire, not 0.50) to penetrate steam pipelines, for example.

Effectiveness of light aircraft cannons against ships

On destroyer-sized warships and larger ammo has splinter protection. Against mashine guns/light cannons it is enough. Against depth charges - probably, but can't remember certain cases(from bullet hits). Against light cruiser - almost useless - much better to strafe bridge/AA batteries, to...

    Vulnerability of liquid cooled engines

Short burst from below was effective -bouncing 7.7 bullet is enough for sufficient cooler damage. Same burst from above is probably enough to silence poor rear gunner(but rear gunner of attacked craft, not surrounding ones!), but not to bring craft down. Anything greater(time wise) is way too...

    Vulnerability of liquid cooled engines

Another hint: (soviet statistics) More then 20% damaged craft had damage to wings, but only 3% to oil cooler. Of aircraft that made it back(i.e. landed safely/crash-landed on field),not shoot down. Il-2 was quite resistant to simple holes, and control wires in the wings were reserved. It is...

    Vulnerability of liquid cooled engines

P-51 is obviously getting compared with other American fighters. But comparing with lighter European fighters... 3 fighters you mentioned(spit, bf-109, yak) - all were among easier ones to shoot down(damage-absorbing ability wise). And Il-2 is very good example: how heavily armoured craft's...

Fastest seaplane/flying boat, ski plane of WW2 ?

In theory - E15K among the fastest. But real performance with detached main float remained mystery.

    Strafers

Well, simple example: Il-10 prooved quite formidable in Europe.(spring '45) (on low level strafe runs it is more or less analogue to fw-190f). A-20 B-25 of VVS, when tried for ground attack - happened to be kamikaze crafts(plus found to be not too responsive at low heights and low speeds), and...
