This is one of the mounts of Tetsizo Iwamoto, one of the top Japanese aces, circa early '44. Stationed in Rabaul, New Britain.
And done. 4AM local time, but it's still Sunday since I haven't fallen asleep yet.
At some time during the build, I misplaced the propeller assembly, and only found it yesterday. Its last coat of flat is curing as we speak. I'll have pictures up tomorrow. Hopefully the weather will cooperate...
Should be interesting. Tamiya XF81, and for the brown, probably Humbrol 118, or Vallejo equvilant since Humbrol isn't sold locally.
One of the few perks of not being able to find much photo reference, I think, is that it gives you more room to be artistic about the whole deal. Kind of Bob Ross...

The kit is from a bundle of bagged Tamiya/Hasegawa/Academy kits I won on EBay a few years ago for super cheap. I'll be building it straight up...

After 2 extra rounds of slicing, poking, Micro-Soling, and then a buff with a super fine sanding stick, I was able to get the wrinkles down to a fairly presentable (to my eyes at least) level. After the dullcoat, they will probably look like...
Laid down the decals this morning. Found out I had a set of Aeromaster Zeros decals squirreled away. So I decided to source the hinomarus, prop markings, and stencils from those and then use the kit decals (with a coat of Microscale decal film) for the wing walks, tail codes, and victory...
Well thank you sir for the tip! It makes sense, now that I've thought about it. Gloss only the parts being declared, then gloss the entire airframe to seal it all afterwards. Use a 1/3rd less gloss coat for the project, and save time as well.
Looks fantastic!
If you dont mind me asking: I see you glossed only the areas where you had to put decals. I've always thought about this myself, as it would save time/material, but I was afraid it might make two slightly different colored areas when I layed the full cost down. Never had the...
