    Help identifying ww2 plane part

Could have been trawled up by a fishing boat and dumped when clearing the nets several hours later. We had a nearly complete Corsair trawled up in the 1980's near here, the boat had to drag it twenty KM to harbour to get it released.

    Help identifying ww2 plane part

Apologies, scrap the Arado 196 idea, the trim tab crank on the 196 is on the Port side. I agree with Wurger, looks very He 111 as in the page from the rigging manual. Question is now which Heinkel came down near there.

    Help identifying ww2 plane part

After a bit of digging, the part looks like it is a rudder trim tab from an Arado AR196. The Arado 66 had fabric trim tabs. https://scalespot.com/reviews/books/valiant_arado_ar196/review.php Came to this conclusion as Luftwaffe Norway web site has: 18/10/43 by Alesund AR196A-3 of 1(F)/131...

    Help identifying ww2 plane part

Going by the thickness it is probably a trim tab but off what ? If you check for numbers on the parts it may give us a clue to the manufacturer.

    Spitfire info requested

Did some more digging as the Form 540 Operational Record Book and Form 541 Detail of work carried out seemed more than a bit lacking in detail and found the attached in the appendices. Seems that the records were constructed retrospectively in Feb 1944 therefore the details of the accident may...

Just noticed that on the second letter the postmark is "Chester" which probably means that he was at 57 Operational Training Unit when the letter was written. 57OTU was at Hawarden, Chester

    Spitfire info requested

Been scanning through 126 sqn ORB's but have had no luck yet as I have run out of credits with National Archives. Did a bit more digging and found the letters on the link below. Seems that he returned to the US in April 1944. https://azmemory.azlibrary.gov/nodes/view/132536#idx587616 At an OTU...

    Spitfire info requested

If you have a name, squadron and rough date of the crash the aircraft serial may be in the Operational Record Book for the squadron. Happy to look it up.

“Clock” on the instrument panel of Spitfires, various Mks?

On the Lancaster the clock was just above the throttle levers. https://www.flickr.com/photos/dawsonimages/49789138396 Problem with aircraft clocks is that they were fitted to more than one type of aircraft so no such thing as a "Spitfire" clock. Early marks of Spitfire used the same clocks as...

WASHED UP WRECKAGE - Northern Scotland

Absolutely correct, easy when you have a list of prefixes for each Mark. What I should have said is that Supermarine prefixes in the 300 series relate to different Marks of Spitfire. I agree, there is the further complication where aircraft were modified on repair so may have more than one...

    Help to Identify Instrument Panel

Two aircraft were registered as N39193. a Curtiss Jenny JN4C biplane cancelled in 2012 and Taylorcraft BC12-D monpplane cancelled in 1981. My money is on the Taylorcraft as the panel on the JN4C was very very basic. The panel could have been a lashup until a suitable panel was found. Both would...
