The first flight was literally days after I was born and I spent most of my career in the RAF working on these things.

Unfortunately, with the state of the German economy in 1940, the option of Germany just pulling out of France was pretty much nil. They needed to loot France to keep Germany going. Adam Tooze's book The Wages Of Destruction is very good on this.
