What use did these 2 parts have?

There were Finnish Hawk 75s that flew for the axis with Swastikas painted on them.

    Oxygen toxicity

Humans do not breath elemental oxygen. They breath O2 which is one form of molecular oxygen and is two atoms of oxygen combined. O3 is ozone which is toxic, so in that sense oxygen can be toxic.

    A gunship in WW2

The pic with a 6 gun chin turret is interesting. I've never seen that arrangement before. The model with a B-24 style nose turret sure is ugly though. The equivalent B-24 gunship was the XB-41. It suffered the same fate as the YB-40.

Fast bomber for USAAC: how would've you done it?

I've read through this thread and find it pretty interesting, so I'm going to throw my idea out there. Produce the XB-33A Super Marrauder. It is proposed to be pretty fast already, but very heavy. It uses engines that are proven and available. If the service ceiling numbers are accurate at...

    eye witness accounts

This link is probably the program you are thinking of. Our local historical society submitted a couple of tapes from a resident who was a survivvor of the Battle of the Bulge. His kids were shocked to learn what their dad had been through. Veterans History Project (Library of Congress)

    P-47 carrier capable?

Interesting that the Skyraider which was designed to operate from WW2 era carriers had a design wing loading of 45 lbs per foot compared to the P-47s 44.3. From what I've read it also had a maximum arrested landing weight of 17,000 pounds, although the landing speed, as expected, was quite a bit...

    Surprising interview

I wouldn't think he should be upset. After all, he was wearing a hat that invited commentary.

    Surprising interview

If he'll allow it, record the conversation. Prepare some questions in advance to get him started. Then donate a copy of the tape, with his permission of course, to your local historical society. Most love to get oral histories from residents. Some state historical commissions have oral history...

    Cockpit Colorings

I think that I read somewhere long ago that the green color on the interior of U.S. planes was the natural color of the zinc chromate coating that was sprayed on as a corrosion inhibitor. Any additional coating would certainly have added weight and cost.

    World's Best Aircraft - 1944?

C-46s carried much more payload than the C-47 but could not operate out of some of the more primitive Pacilfic fields. Curtiss had significant problems fulfilling it's contracts for other designs, to the point that government procurement people got involved and in some cases took over Curtiss'...

    Scrapping B29's on Tinian

I've seen that same picture in a book. Not sure if I could locate it, but the caption was that they were war weary and damaged airframes that were beyond repair. As such, they were bulldozed onto a pile after critical spare parts had been removed. Space was a bit limited on Tinian, Saipan and...

    yb 40

There was a an XB-41 version of the B-24 that employed a similar gunship concept. The XB-41 was built as a one off conversion of a production line aircraft. There was a concept for a B-29 variant, but I'm not sure if there was ever a designation number assigned to it.
