    Transports....

C-130. Consider everything that the basic aircraft has been modified to accomplish, along with how long the type has been in production. Nothing else comes close. It has some of the best abilities: Dependability, Availability, Reliability, and Flexibility. My personal favorite version...

Book: "Their Finest Hour - The Battle of Britain Remembered" by Kaplan and Collier

I've recently finished this book after checking it out from the local library. It was published in 1989 which makes it old enough to give historical perspective and balance while still having first hand accounts from the men and women involved. It also has many photos of the area in 1988 which...

A-6 Intruder, Any Weather, Any Time....

I guess giving your average college graduate a stick, rudder, throttle, and a shiny piece of metal to pin on their cover makes him / her automatically more qualified than a trained enlisted man. Thankfully, I served and flew with very few officers that thought like that. Most that did didn't...

Cold War Mayhem- How the Soviets Were Going to Attack the Carrier Battle Groups

Very informative paper. I was intrigued by the mention of encoded morse code as the most reliable means of communication in areas with US jamming. Check out footnote 38. 38. In the author’s own experience, Enigma-style crypto devices able to send secure messages letter by letter in Morse...

What is the Best Beer in the World Poll

Is Bitburger still a popular beer in Germany? I used to drink that quite a bit when we flew there for training missions. My personal local favorite is Shiner Bock. Local steakhouse has it on tap. Very good.

    Left, left, steady....

To give an idea of how it works in recent times, I enlisted open contract in the USMC in 1988. Open contract means USMC will decide what MOS (job) you will learn based on the needs of the Corps. I think this is very similar to the way the services decided what to do with draftees back in the...

    ID these please

Are you guys sure the first two are both La-7? I've been looking at some other sites and the first pic has radial engines and the second looks like inline. Maybe the second is a Yak-1? Were the Il-4 and Pe-8 good aircraft?
