    Fw 190A-8 cockpit hood

Blown hoods are not always dependent on Wnr. I don't think - it seems they used whatever they had - but yes they were pretty commonly found on FW190A-8.

Least resource intensive/easy to maintain aircraft of WW2?

It took an enormous time to work on in the field IMO. Freeman's Mighty Eighth War Manual goes into some detail on maintaining P-47s in the field. People always go on about how big and complicated some of the German Tigers were... Some P-47 took a staggering 700 man hours if you followed the...

    Friendly fire incidents

Goodness, and I thought the German AAA firing on the Bodenplatte attack force was bad.

Least resource intensive/easy to maintain aircraft of WW2?

For fighters in the field give me a FW190 all day long. Cost 1/3 of a P-47 Thunderbolt and could quickly be modified to pure fighter, fighter bomber and long range fighter bomber. Built for quick maintenance in primitive, rough field conditions and power eggs were basically plug and play - as...

Ar-234. Flew over the highest concentration of Allied aircraft, undetected.

Jumo 213 Boost Pressure in Winter Months?

Thanks - I was trying to estimate from standard atmosphere the top speeds for the major late war fighters in cold winter months. For the underlying reason: I was trying to see if D-9 was suffering in performance in cold relative to say P-51 because of the way the engines are boosted.

Jumo 213 Boost Pressure in Winter Months?

Could the Jumo-213A be adjusted to develop 1.8ata in cold winter months, or was this not done? Would the top speed of the D-9 suffer in comparison to say a Mustang since the Mustang get's a % boost in winter, but the Dora-9 stays the same? The Mustang adds say 85 (?) hp in winter, how much...

Jumo 213 Boost Pressure in Winter Months?

Thank you. I just finished your book by the way...outstanding! I was confused and stuck on the lower ata and wrongly thought it meant lower power. That regulator then is quite fascinating.

Griffon Spitfire was better than any Bf109?

Yes, this sounds like Bud Anderson's experience in one of his fights with a 109... I was able to speak personally to P-51 pilot Punchy Powell as he lived near me in the Atlanta area and he described with great frustration trying to catch a flight of 4 109s at high altitude and being on the edge...

Griffon Spitfire was better than any Bf109?

Indeed...I wish we had more first hand accounts from mechanics working in the field on these aircraft. I feel like their insight would be particularly fascinating. It seems so many interviewed the pilot's etc. but nobody really thought to interview those guys that actually kept these birds in...

Griffon Spitfire was better than any Bf109?

Yes, point taken on the classic car example, that's a good one. Most of those pictures come from private albums, only made public years after the war, and not subject to censorship...the first hand account was simply to give the general impression the pilot had with the aircraft itself, which...

Jumo 213 Boost Pressure in Winter Months?

Could the Jumo-213 reach it's full boost pressure 1.8 ata in cold winter months? I can't read technical German (or any German at all!) so it is very difficult for me to understand the operation and boost pressure of this motor and it's unique mass air flow regulator. Since the engine had a mass...

Griffon Spitfire was better than any Bf109?

With regard to build quality (yes I've read the meeting notes) I'd like to understand what effect did local mechanics have on putting reliable aircraft in the air? Obviously build quality suffered due to the war situation, but I have yet to see an in-service 109 I would say "looks" appalling...
