I do love the Hayabusa though, its such a trim, elegant machine.
I just wish they would have incorporated a retractable tail wheel, it almost ruins the clean lines
The Bf 109 had the capacity to be upgraded to a point that it remained competitive with the very best of Allied types, within an increasingly narrow envelope. A G-10 or K-4 was still a formidable adversary in 1945, even when flown against a P-51D or Spitfire Mk.XIV.
The Ki-43 was still dangerous...
Perhaps I am misremembering, but I thought the fabric control surfaces were found to "balloon" at high speeds, and were quickly retrofitted with metal skinned versions during the BOB. Maybe the Mk.V was the first to have them as standard from the factory?
The P-40 didn't enter service until 1941. In December of 1938, the only fighters, that I can think of anyway, meeting the definition would be the Bf 109C/D, Hurricane Mk.I and Spitfire Mk.I. The M.S.406 and Bf 109E were perhaps JUST rolling off the production lines in late 1938.
