I did not die at Normandy, at Midway, or Saipan,
I never stormed the Ardennes, I didn't bomb Japan.
I didn't die in Africa, or Sicily, or Rome--
Our pilot crashed our bomber, when we were nearly home.
For many thankless hours, we flew above the fray,
We toiled and strove unendingly to live another day.
So as you lay my body underneath the sandy loam,
Remember all the airmen who perished close to home.
