Didn't read the entire thread, so forgive me if this has been said already: In no way would the P-38K replace either one. Later modells of the '51 and '4u flew in Korea while the P-38s were being scrapped in Arizona. P-38 was a great fighter, but it had its place.
Best of luck with the health issues. Clashes IS an awesome book. One of my favs. The Mig-21 was a bad ass design. Simple, sleek and deadly. I have always wondered if the Mig-19 and 21s had been in the hands of equal pilots to ours and had proper leadership (ground control and so forth)...
So what does 神風 mean????
This is the first time in 40+ years I have ever read that Kamikaze is not a Japanese word. I guess I'm gonna have to write all the authors from the hundreds of books I've read and tell them to come up with another Japanese term for Divine Wind...............I'll be...
While it may be true that many pilots were saved, those that were lost/wounded were the best Japan had. Add those to the losses suffered at Coral Sea and Japans carrier air groups were pretty beat up.
The main consequence of Midway was the experienced carrier pilots were not available for the Guadalcanal campaign. Had KAGA, AKAGI, SORYU and HIRYU been there at full strength the USN would have been in dire straits. Plus adding a healthy Mogami and Mikuma to the Battle of Savo in Oct of '42...
Your also talking a stock off the line first series Bearcat with a -4 Corsair. Give Grumman another year to modify the F8F and it would be better. As far as the A7M Reppu, woulda been a good fight for any of the allied fighters at the time and was a damn fine looking plane.

Height advantage can be negated depending on what alt you are at. Bombers/escort flying below 1000ft leaves little room for interceptors to boom and zoom.
Not only that. They needed to rotate their front line pilots to give them a break. Many of their best pilots flew till they died. That was a major mistake.
