I enjoyed every minute at the races! (Full disclosure - I'm still just a future pilot, and better get a move on!) I was there Saturday and Sunday - what a blast!
Because I maintain & operate an R2800 at the lab, I'm partial to round engines, but it doesn't take very many Merlins (one maybe?) to...
Who knows how to adjust these things? It's an American Bosch, AN4181-1, Type VJ6 24A1, 27 volts, 2.7 amps, Aircraft Engine Starting Vibrator.
The story: My wind generator R2800-CB3 (yes, actually used to generate wind, for testing purposes) gave me trouble several months ago when the vibrator...
Engine: P&W R2800-CB3 probably from a DC-6
Application: wind generator (ground use only)
Symptom: stalls out during operation with almost no warning. For a few seconds prior to cutout, the fuel pressure wobbles a bit, then starts dropping fast. She will recover with boost pressure...
The coil specs I reported were the secondary windings. The 1 or 2 primary coils I checked, if I remember right, were in the range of 3 - 5 ohms. I didn't check all of 'em; I didn't have those connectors off and didn't want to pull them just for the data.
That is talking abot a coil IN the magneto? My R2800 uses the low tension system with one coil on every cylinder. I imagine the transformer would be nearly the same, but if it uses slightly different gauge wire, the resistance would be different also.
I just finished measuring all my coils...
This summer is as hot as ever in Fresno, but after a good bath (long overdue), the ol' girl runs much cooler. I used kerosene in a pneumatic sprayer for hours going over the engine. Some cylinders have such heavy buildup, I may have to get more aggressive. Some cylinders have a thin but...
I have a R-2800-CB Double Wasp Maintenance Manual, reissued March, 1957, part no. 166498.
I've been through it about six times looking for some ohms. Nothing yet.
Does anyone know the primary and secondary coil resistance for a Pratt Whitney R2800-CB3 low-tension ignition system? I'm seeing some variation in different cylinders' coils on , and I don't know if it's OK or if somebody was simply desparate enough for parts to use whatever would make fire...
resurrecting this old thread...
I am forced to abuse this engine regularly. Used only for generating wind during a test, after warm-up, the RPM during a test is almost always around 1600 (once it was 2000), and then I have to shut 'er down. Of course this is never at altitude. Since startup...
For a more complete description, the [E] is actually in a complete square the same size as the numbers, and the E is very small inside the box.
When I looked at my parts list, there is a list of several plugs. I don't see any indication which plugs go with which exact model engines, and I...
Part A)
I'm running a Pratt Whitney R2800-CB3 using Champion RHB37E plugs. I need a source of new plugs, and I want to know who's good.
Part B)
What's the little [E] after the number on the plug? I guess the Champion part number really is RHB37E-[E].
So I'm finally getting around to this. I picked up one of those pneumatic solvent spray guns and went through a gallon of kerosene in a little over an hour of spraying here there. Some of this grime is so thick, she will require several treatments at the spa.
Question: As this gun has lots...
Interesting note from the 1957 Double Wasp CB Maintenance manual:
If necessary, wash the exterior of the engine throroughly with kerosene or cleaning solvent, being careful to keep the cleaning fluid away from the ignition cable assembly. Dry the engine with compressed air.
