    Best Wishes For Charles

The sheer number of good wishes on here shows the high esteem in which you are held, Mr C. Now, do buck-up and get back on the forum, please - there's a good chap. Best wishes for a speedy and complete recovery.

    RAF Application

Get used to this sort of thing Gnomey, it happens - A LOT! And why not Air Traffic Control as a second string, pray tell??? Remember Pilots are responsible for 1 aeroplane - Air Traffickers are responsible for LOTS! (usually in the same piece of sky where I was concerned! )

Did We Really Think It Was A Good Idea?

Ref the Defiant; Old Wife's Tales never die or even simply fade away! Please see my #29 post "http://www.ww2aircraft.net/forum/aviation/boulton-paul-defiant-7448-2.html" It ain't wot u got - its the way that u use it!

    British B-24 with mods.

There was also an RAF mod to one B-24D equivalent (a GR V?) with 4 x RPs braced off either side of the nose that was to have been used in anti-submarine attacks so, presumably, 25 lb AP warheads would have been used....... Can't find the picture I know I have somewhere. Alan Blue's book 'The...

    RAF Application

Gnomey, when you do the team exercises in the hangar, find out if anyone has any skills that will help (knot-tying, physical strength or lightness). Then thoroughly BRIEF your Team on the plan carefully so that everyone knows what YOU intend and what THEY are going to do. At the end of the...

I bet this was an exciting landing!

Sorry Guys, don't see what the problem is - we Brits used to lubricate our radials like that normally!!! eg, Centaurus and Pegasus to name but 2!

    taking a pounding - b-17 or b-24

Here's where my data came from: "The B-24 Liberator" by Allan G Blue, published in the UK by Ian Allan

Don't disagree with your reasoning at all, with which I concur! I'm just recalling that which I have read in the past. This info stuck in what passes for my mind due to the illogical nature of it, for all the reasons you mention, allied to the poorer visibilty from the Nav and bomb-aimer...

    taking a pounding - b-17 or b-24

Hi drgondog, Currently at work (and bored for the first time in months!) and don't have access to my References. However, I'll try to post them when I get home tonight........

Hi Guys, Been a bit of a while but you are discussing 2 of my favourite aeroplanes here! I have read much about both of them so – as an impartial Brit - may I add my 2 pennyworth? No? Thought not! Don’t care! So - in summation - here goes! B-17 – Pros: Easier to fly in...

    Lancaster Landing

This IS the one flying Lancaster in the UK and it belongs to the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight (BBMF) of the RAF; the only other flying one is the Canadian Mk X. If it’s the incident I think it is, this was a few years ago and the undercarriage legs, mountings et al had to be repaired...

Girls and Aircraft - Volume II

Tell you what chaps - if that female on the MoD ATC recruiting advert looked as rabbit scared  as that at work, she'd would have been under very close supervision on my Sqn! And if the truth be told she'd be fighting for any solo endorsements too with that apparent lack of confidence...

Girls and Aircraft - Volume II

NOW how do you feel timshatz?!! I certainly wouldn't mind doing a few hours of 'dual' with her..........she can obviously handle a big chopper well in any situation! Well done Michelle - bet Mum and Dad are proud, and so they should be! (For he benefit of our non-UK readers - the...

    it was not smart

Nearly as good (or bad - depending on your point of view!) as the early Napier Sabres and R-R Vultures! And I don't recall the R-3350 have the best of reputations for longevity in their early days either. There is a train of thought that says “what is the point in having equipment with a...
