Phenomally fast aircraft, nimble as an I-16... at altitude. below 20000 though she was a pig. At low altitude the wings that make it so nimble at altitude make it hard to reach 350 down low. It had absolutely no ablility to carry ordinance, and that is half of most operational fighters duties...

This is such a tough one, I like both of the aircraft. Objectively they both have reputations as rugged and durable aircraft, but the jug edges out the corsair in that arena. At low altitude in fighter vs. fighter I will take the La-5, at medium altitude I will take the Fw-190 . The Tojo is a great climber but about 40 knots slower. Speed always trumps angles.

The Dora really never had a chance, when it arrived they could never send it up in force, they went up against P-51s and Mk XIVs at odds of 4 and 5 to one Dora. I don't think the dora killed too many bombers.

You could counter that argument with the Boing P-26 Peashooter as the worlds first modern fighter. You wll argue the Boings lack of retractable landing gear, but the Boing had alot of firsts.
