(REVISED) Most Formidable Low-Med Altitude Fighter Aircraft

This quote could be used for 3/4 of the a/c on the list..... But, the Ki-100 has been added.

(REVISED) Most Formidable Low-Med Altitude Fighter Aircraft

I've done my best to include notable air-frames from Allied and Axis powers. If I missed any, by all means comment with a suggestion. Feel free to include reasoning behind your choice.

Low Altitude Combat: Maybe Spitfire Mk. XVI, Tempest V, La-7, Yak-3?....

The fighters listed above are notable for their characteristics at low to medium altitudes. I'll include others as I'm sure I've missed several but we'll keep it a point to include aircraft that operationally served in the Second World War.

You are a WW2 pilot and you get to pick your plane.

I'd snort cocaine off the hind quarters of one of FLYBOYJ's PBY "guests" and hijack a V-2 to Endor. But on a hypothetical note, I'd love to be proficient in piloting a P-47N over Formosa. Maybe even flying a Beaufighter on anti-shipping sorties in the Mediterranean.

Planes that just were not needed

In hindsight 20/20, the first airframe that comes to mind is the Me-410. Those Daimler Benz 603's could've possibly been applied to a more useful design like the Fw-190V-18. (Fw-190C)

    MOST OVERRATED AIRCRAFT OF WWII

My submission would be the IL-2. Reason being that for a designated ground attack/support aircraft, it's ordinance capacity though historically adequate, was unimpressive compared to other a/c of the same role. The Typhoons, Fw-190F's and G's, Corsairs, and Thunderbolts all carried equal or...

    MOST UNDERRATED AIRCRAFT OF WWII?

Yep. Goodyear built Corsairs, Arado and Dornier built 190's....

    MOST UNDERRATED AIRCRAFT OF WWII?

With a 5.5:1 aerial victory ratio over Japanese aircraft, I'll throw the Grumman F4F Wildcat/Martlet into the hat. Actually, I personally think that in comparison to manufacturers like Supermarine, North American, and several others, Grumman was very underrated with thier rugged birds like the...

    improving the 109??

Good topic, I've heard some of those before and some of those improvements were placed into application at one point or another. Just not in effective time or quantity. One of the previous threads from many moons ago (think it was Erich) mentioned sanding down and wax coating operational G-14s...

Best Long Range Fighter of WWII

As a non-member (until recently) reading this sight's forums for many years, this is the first thread I've felt comfortable with answering P-51 or P-47 without someone profusely chanting why a Griffon Spit (Or if you're Soren, a 190D-9) is exponentially superior. Anyway, my answer based upon...
