Japanese aircraft were behind in timing to Allied aircraft.

I was hinting at the people who said "superior allied fuel" made Japanese fighters outperform planes running on what they had. You don't get the extra power until you work the engine management system to take advantage of the better fuel. Unmodified japanese plane with superior allied fuel...

What if “military class” reciprocating aircraft engines and aircraft were still being designed and built?

When each engine has near 15,000hp, you will surely get exhaust thrust. Now Reno racers are still in the stone age and have argued with Mike Nixon many times over how modern engine management would hugely benefit.

Japanese aircraft were behind in timing to Allied aircraft.

The big question is whether the testing of Axis aircraft had them simply dumping in better allied fuel.

    Best Dogfighter Poll Revisited...

I think the one at the smithsonian was converted to F8 but, in times of war, they don't perform every detail modification in the conversion. They just needed it modded to perform a specific task.

    Two stage Superchargers

So you call the charger cooler that sits after all supercharging stages the same name as the charge cooler that sits between stages of supercharging? Hint: they use different names to indentify thier location on the engine. This makes it easier to order the proper part. All of the...

If the 'Spruce Goose' could fly, how effective would it have been ?

Hughes just wanted to prove what could be done in spite of wartime shortages of strategic materials. He chose to achieve this with an airplane people thought could not be built without huge amounts of aluminum. I think it was a F.U. to the establishment from the beginning.

Mid-air collision at Duxford- Mustang lost/ Skyraider damaged!

I'm sure he found the stick stuck in pitch and probably found rudder pedals non-moving as well. He probably popped the canopy right away since canopy release is standard proceedure for all emergency landings in the mustang and probably did so while trying and successfully righting the plane...

    F6F-5 vs J2M3

One thing we should probably take with a grain of salt is the japanese pilots' opinion of the handling of the late war interceptors. These guys flew the zero or ki43 before transitioning into the j2m3, ki84, and N1K2 so thier opinion of the "handling" is purely by comparison to previous...

Mid-air collision at Duxford- Mustang lost/ Skyraider damaged!

To the skyraider pilot's point of view, this mustang disappeared behind him and visibilitiy of the mustang should have been reacquired as the skyraider performed his break. I don't think the skyraider reacquired the leader because the leader was still behind him from his point of view and...

Mid-air collision at Duxford- Mustang lost/ Skyraider damaged!

Nice to see no bad injuries. He was out of that mustang so fast I wonder if he wasn't already on his way out when they collided. From the videos of the earlier fly-bys and break turns, the mustang is the only one that suddenly stopped turning midway through the turn as well as descending...
