@all, I am attaching a couple of photos of an R-1340 sump. The cast aluminum structure between the bottom two cylinders is the sump. From the second picture taken from underneath the engine, you can see how the rocker boxes drain into the sump. The top of the sump is also open allowing oil to...
IIRC, the flaps on the CAF plane are metal. But I'll check for you.
I have seen pics of the newly restored POF F8F and it looks great.
Are you just curious or another reason you would like to know?
I am not sure about all F8F-2 flaps, but I am happy to check the flaps at the CAF SoCal museum for you. We are in the midst of a restoration of our F8F-2.
Grumman F8F-2 Bearcat
Thanks for the information, guys.
Darren, If the Hellcat is not at an airshow this weekend, I'll try to find the data plate in the cockpit and take a picture. The CAF website is where I got the info about -3 fuselage and -5 pieces. I have only been "volunteering" since Aug'17 and joined the...
Hi Guys,
Thanks for all the great info. I recently joined the crew maintaining the Hellcat (N1078Z) at CAF SoCal in Camarillo. Turns out the plane is a combination of parts with a F6F-3 fuselage and parts from the -5. Now that I read this thread I am trying to figure out what cowling we have...
Here is a link to the YouTube video of the CAF SoCal Wing's Yak-3M and Grumman Hellcat flying to (or from) the Beale AFB airshow.

and a nice screen capture:
Darren,
My son and I went to the Wings over Camarillo Airshow co-sponsored by the CAF. I met an old friend there who is a member and he highly recommended joining. My two sons and I had the great fortune to be trained for three years by a IA in San Jose. Every Sunday he would train a small...
Chip,
Looks like you are getting some great advice from DarrenW about the history of the color schemes. Let me know if you need any more pictures of hardware.

Chip,
Happy Monday. thanks for the compliments. Sounds like you are learning some interesting techniques. Good stuff.
I happened to see our unit historian, Ron Fleishman on Saturday. I asked him about the original paint schemes on the Hellcat and Bearcat. He confirmed that there were only...
Hey! picture uploading works and they look great to me. I like the way the fins look on the engine. I see what you mean about the axle, brakes, wheel hubs; they look very little like the full size. I'll take more pictures on Saturday. My guess however is that the paint of our birds is not...
Chris,
I am glad the photos helped you. Best of luck with the rest of your build. Let me know if you need anything else.
As far as the paint schemes go, I am far from an expert. My interest is wrenching on the planes. I am lucky enough to live close to the CAF Museum in Camarillo and have...
Hey Chip, Was at CAF Camarillo again Saturday (working on F8F-2 ignition again). As we were leaving we walked by the Hellcat and I took another picture for you.
Chip, I volunteer at CAF So Cal (Camarillo Airport). Last weekend, my son and I were part of a team changing wheels on their Hellcat. I have uploaded a picture to help. Let me know if that is what you need. If not, let me know and I can take a better picture next time we go. Joe
I know it has been a while since this thread was started, but there has been no answer. I found a Bendix Ignition manual for the R-2800 last year. The ignition specs are 15-25 ohms for primary and 4000-7000 ohms for secondary. We have been troubleshooting an ignition problem on the R-2800 on...
