I completely agree, there are too many aspects involved which make it impossible to determine what aircraft was "better". Obviously the P-40 and F4F fought very highly skilled foes, and caused attrition from which the Japanese never recovered in 1941-43.
I'm not saying the F6F was better, I...
That's not what I meant at all. I completely agree. Please look at all the previous posts saying that the F6F was superior because it could take off from a carrier which made it more versatile. The only reason this would be an advantage would be because it could go places that a land based...
This is a very broad topic as I mentioned before. If you are just considering air to air combat then one trait the P-38 had that was superior to the P-51 was it's gun emplacement. Placing the guns directly on the nose reduced jamming tendancies when compared to guns on the wing of a fighter, and...
I see people are still posting how the comparisons of these two aircraft is wrong. Okay as I've said the only reason I chose the P-38 and F6f is because they both performed similar missions for ther respective services (air superiority, sweeps, and ground attack). I know that their kill tallies...
Wow I totally forgot about this thread, anyway thanks everyone for the contributions. When looking at this topic the way most did I agree it was confusing/difficult to make a comparison between the two types. I just picked the P-38 and the F6F because as I said they were the USAAF's and USN's...
It's hard to make a comparison like this, with any two types of WWII fighters. To compare the P-51 and P-38 is hard unless you largely narrow down the categories. The P-51 was a better all round fighter (air to air), but the P-38 was definitely a force to be reckoned with. The P-38 had very good...
I've always wondered this about these two fighter groups. I know they each flew both the P-47 and P-51 during WWII, but of there roughly 350 aerial victories each how many were credited to each type of fighter? I know the 353rd and the 78th each had great success with the P-47 but I assume that...
Probably the Me-163. Despite it's incredible technological/performance superiority over everything else, it did not have much success in combat. Plus it's fuel would melt flesh if it came in contact with a person, and it killed more pilots in training/operational accidents than in combat.
The P-51s in this incident were from the 4th FG right? I remember hearing this story from a WWII Veteran I met once who was a crew chief with the 4th FG. I wish I could think of his name, but it was a very brief meeting about 4 years ago.
Yes the Tempest had more firepower with its 20mm cannons. But when you say that the P-47's durability can't compete with them, do you mean that the P-47 couldn't withstand hits from 20mm guns? Because I think many P-47 pilots would disagree, just read Robert Johnson's (56th FG ace) story of his...
