    Best Tank of WW2

    KV-1C Model 1942 (KV-1S in English). Not to be confused with the KV-1s (s = skorostny/ fast).

Do You Have an Illogical Hatred of an Aircraft?

The Spit also had a lower t/c ratio which would help.

    Stavatti SM-27M COIN Airplane

Um, isn't the whole website a spoof/ fanboy dream? Defense Tech: "LASER RIFLE" DESIGN A HOAX The site (and designs) and very nice, but I doubt that there's any reality to them.

    Best Tank of WW2

Not gun-wise particularly. (Yes it had the 75, 17 pdr* and a 105**). Ah not quite. Comet was the first British tank to be actually designed around a gun - check David Fletcher's 3 volume history of British armour. Valentine - started with a 2 pdr, upgraded to 6 pdr then 75 mm. Churchill...

Soviet aircraft the west coulda/shoulda used?

Looks like there's a hole through the port wing root/ flap and another large mess in what's left of the starboard aileron. Interestingly the hole through the port root looks (from the "lips" around the hole) as if the round went in through the top of the wing...

    Amazing Air Traffic visualisation

Yep, a great circle route is usually the shortest distance.

    Amazing Air Traffic visualisation

Because it's not actually a curve it's a "straight line"*. The world is spherical, the map is flat so what is really a straight line appears to be curved on a 2D representation. * Part of a Great Circle. This might be of interest.

Soviet aircraft the west coulda/shoulda used?

No that was the problem; we wanted to make it all in-house, but some things don't translate directly. For example the little plastic bit - we had to set up a new "industry" practically since nobody in the UK Made anything like it. Aircraft (and practically everything else manufactured) are set...

Soviet aircraft the west coulda/shoulda used?

I'd be surprised if it it took less than six, even with a large team of draughtsmen. And no, with modern computers it takes far longer than days. A few years ago I worked for a British company that had an American parent company, they sent us the drawings (not plans!) of their latest design of...

The Greatest Fighter Jet of All Time.

Seconded, his article was always the first thing I read when I got my copy of Air International. I think he is (he was listed as a member of The Hawker Association in 2008 ), one of my "regrets" is that I missed meeting him by about fifteen minutes at the last Redhill HeliTech I went to (that...

The Greatest Fighter Jet of All Time.

Digging a bit further (Thornborough also mentions essentially the same story in Modern Air Combat) it was during the AIMVAL/ ACEVAL tests and the "Red" side was actually the Aggressors. Unfortunately I can't find any AIMVAL/ ACEVAL reports (other than documents referencing those reports) on the...

The Greatest Fighter Jet of All Time.

You mean Sidewinder short range and Sparrow medium? Yes. But the 'winder is IR homing whereas the Sparrow requires that the target be lit up by the launching fighter's own radar, so the 15s had to keep going forwards towards the incoming 'winders. By the time the Sparrows had impacted, the...

The Greatest Fighter Jet of All Time.

It was reported (anecdotally) by Roy Braybrook in one issue of Air International toward the end (maybe mid) 70s. Among other sources, I think one of Mike Spick's books also tells the story. Apparently it was head-on attack and the F-5s launched their 'winders at the earliest opportunity, the...
