    Radial vs liquid cooled engines

Was any engine better suited for combat during WW2 than the other? I know radials offered greater durability, but did they offer any other advantages? And did liquid cooled engines have any inherent advantages over radials?

What was the best - or most significant - fighter-bomber of the war?

The J variants were where most of these issues were solved. The Js were used in the ETO (I definitely should've re-worded "the P-38s used in the ETO we're far from the sturdiest"!), but how often were they used for ground support compared to Ds-Hs? I'd imagine there'd be less Js (and the rare...

What was the best - or most significant - fighter-bomber of the war?

I'm not saying that the P-47's "niche" was that of a fighter-bomber, but I will argue that it is the role that it is most known for and did the most successfully. As for the P-38, the models used in the ETO were far from the sturdiest. The wing roots were vulnerable and there were still some...

What was the best - or most significant - fighter-bomber of the war?

For the ETO, I think the P-47 wins hands down. The fighter-bomber role is what it is known for! But the PTO is a different story. The F-4U of course is somewhere on the list. The P-40, although not the best, was used to great success. The P-38 also deserves a good mention with its excellent...

I appreciate the German planes of WW2 but...

You can't talk about ugly aircraft without the LWS-6 Zubr getting a fair mention Hurricane!

Which double-engined aircraft of WWII, with piston engines was the fastest one?

Does anyone have some test data for the top speed of the HE-219 A7? I'm getting a mixed bag from articles on the Internet ranging from 385 mph to 415 mph (higher frequency in the 385 range)

Fighter or bomber depending on USAAF pilot size

I've always loved hearing about the P-47's comfortable cockpit. I especially love hearing about the N's! An autopilot system advanced enough to allow you to take a nap and (correct me if I'm wrong) armrests sound like a pretty nice ride, especially for the PTO. Should've added cup holders for...

Could the later model P38 establish complete control of air over Germany without P51

In all honesty, I don't think the "official" document has been published. I believe the main article most pull info from is Whatever Happened To The P-38K ?. Now don't get me wrong, I think that believing a single source (and others citing that single source) is naive, but considering...

Could the later model P38 establish complete control of air over Germany without P51

Interesting. Surprises me how low the J's top speed was as it seems that it's speed on standard fuel was 414 mph. I'm also surprised as to it's RoC. But as you said, tests are tests. And that also means that the K's WEP estimates are far from the law as they are just estimates. But, the K's...

Could the later model P38 establish complete control of air over Germany without P51

If the war had lasted longer, I think we definitely could've seen some big twins outperform the single engined fighters. The Hornet and F-7F are definitely some good examples of such. But let's not forget about how close the P-38 was to surpassing contemporary fighters by a considerable margin...

    1943: USAAF's ideal fighter?

I agree with Oreo. I really would like to see a P-39/63 with a Merlin or any other engine with a sufficient turbocharger

Should Grumman have built a fighter for the US Army?

Weird, that's always what I've heard. Not the first time I've been wrong though!

Should Grumman have built a fighter for the US Army?

On the contrary, the P-38 scored more Japanese kills than any other aircraft. Given the sheer amount of carrier based battles that occurred, thats a pretty impressive feat for a land based fighter. Me personally? I'd rather be caught in a Lightning than a Hellcat. The twin engines, nose mounted...

Worst Piston Monoplane Fighter of WWII

The Breda definitely deserves 1st. If an aircraft's best use in the war was to be a bunch of decoys on the ground drawing attention, you know it's a pathetic aircraft! As for runner up? I think the Blackburn Botha deserves a mention. It was infamously known as a flying death trap. Quoting a...

Was the F4U Seriously Considered for the European Theatre ?

Nice article. Don't see why it couldn't be true. The reason why the F4U wasnt used in the ETO is also completely completely possible lol
