Resolved. German jets were a waste of time and effort

zoomar: There's no argument really. My original question was to find out what effect jets coming a year earlier to Japan would be. If there's no effect, it's cool with me. I'm just curious. Your answers have been very informative. I agree with you about them not having much effect in...

Resolved. German jets were a waste of time and effort

I understand your point zoomar, however if the jets/technology appeared a year earlier the allies would not have had the same control over the air and sea in the Pacific and may not have been as much of a threat.

Resolved. German jets were a waste of time and effort

If the Germans fielded the Me-262 a year earlier that also means it would have potentially shared this with the Japanese. How would this have affected the war in the Pacific?

    Fiat CR.42

Inspired by the thread regarding the Reggia Aeronautica, I have been doing some reading on the Fiat CR.42and it's successes, especially early in war. Due to it's manuverability it was able to score against Glosters, Hurricanes, Spitfires, Me109s etc. It was a successfull night fighter and...

    PZL P.11

I was rather surprised to learn that during the battle of Poland, the PZL P.11 was credited with at least 110 of the 285 of German aircraft that were lost. Not that it was a bad aircraft; it was considered state of the art in 1934. By 1939, however, it was seriously outclassed by the Bf 109...

Aircraft used in "The Great Escape"

Thanks Comiso90! Now I can sleep tonight. I noticed a picture of this aircraft that had the Panzerschreks mounted with the wires running into the cockpit. I'd hate to be the one to go after a tank in that.

    More German Aviation Gasoline

quote: "208 million marks per plant sounds like a lot of money. But consider some naval expenditures that contributed nothing at all to the WWII German war effort" How many allied spys, aircraft, ships, personnel, equipment, money etc. were tied up in locating and destroying the Bismark and...

Field Marshall Douglas Haig : the Butcher of the Somme

Late in the war, when they developed more accuracy in their artillery, one of the major improvements they did on the straight march across no-man's land was the creeping barrage. Instead of just the bombardment, which also alerted the Germans to the attack, they co-ordinated the advance of the...

Your idea for Bomber killing weapons in WWII

Out of curiosity, would it be possible (or even desirable) to mount one of the larger calibre anti-aircraft guns underneath an aircraft like the JU-88 (like the anti-tank guns). You could have a group fly at high altitude and attack the bomber boxes in a shallow dive attack from further away...

    How about a little flip-flop

DaveBender - There were versions of the P-38 that allowed "pods" to be attached under the wings and fuselage (one was designed to transport a person inside of it, although I don't think they enjoyed the ride). You could install the radar in the fuselage or in a pod, install rockets or cannons...

    How about a little flip-flop

Good point MustangRider. Along the same lines of thought, german war production could have been more easily maintained or suffered less financial losses, allowing more output, or allowing more resources to put into special projects (like the jet aircraft etc.). I still think the P-38 would...
