    Emergency Water Injection

A mix of water and alcohol was injected into the airflow at the carb. It would cool the airstream and make the less likley to detonate under full throttle.

    Hangar Bay 1 @ NNAM on 28NOV10

I am just returned from NNAM and looking through Hangar Bay 1 for the first time since it officially opened 10NOV. I have waited to see an addition that will get more aircraft inside and out of the weather for a good ten years. Much work remains. My understand- ing is the both "Que Serra...

New book on the recovery of Brewster Buffalo BW-372

I have now read the book and can say this thing reads like a Tom Clancy novel. Amazing stuff; just a real page turner. As we close on 2011 and the return date of the aircraft to Pensacola, I look forward to seeing it again at NNAM. I recommend the book highly. It's expensive, but damn...

Farewell to the Last VMF-221 Pilot at Midway

Another of my great vet friends has left us. Bill Brooks was the last American to have flown a Buffalo in combat. He was a gracious gentleman. I remember the day the Buffalo arrived at NNAM in P'cola. I called him from the hangar to tell him about it. He was at the dentist but we got to tak...

Navy on Yorktown: Fix it or junk it

The Navy DOES care. They are prohibited by law from providing funds to a museum. There are mysterious ways around this like the DoD part- icipation in the drydocking of Missouri. I wish I knew how it worked and I wish it could YKTN. My understanding is that Intrepid was drydocked with...

MOH recipient plays down 'hero' talk

Yes indeed, I've heard that MANY times. My answer is, "Yes Sir, you are correct. They are the true heroes, but they are gone. Please let me do something for you as tribute to them. May I buy you lunch (dinner, coffee, something). Amazing how it can break the ice....... Owen
