The method of tipping the V1 as Tony described is correct. Shooting at a V1 was likey to 'toast' the pursuing fighter as it flew through the explosion. there are a few good photos on the net and in books of aircraft that were lucky to get back home with the fabric from their control surfaces...
I used to now an old lad flew hurricane and spits. i asked him the question about flying with the hood open or closed. "closed" he said, "nobody wanted a 2 to 300 odd mile per hour wind whistling round them. Plus (he said), not only the cold and the wind, it was also a lot noisier with the hood...
Not having read the book, i can only go on whats been said in conversation here. You have to remember he's talking about naval aircraft and deck landing them. there were more Seafires lost to landing accidents due to the narrow track undercarriage than to enemy action. It simply wasnt designed...

I recently built a 1/32 scale tropical Hurricane depicting an aircraft of No.1 Squadron SAAF and flown by Captain J.H. Gaynor DFC.
To date, i have only found that he was credited with 5.5 kills but can find no more info on him. Does anyone out there have anymore information on him?

this is my first time on here, i stumbled on the site by accident.
Does anyone know whether the SAAF ever took delivery or operated B.17's? They operated B.24's, Havocs and Marauders but I can find no record of them ever having used B.17's... does anyone know better?
Cheers...
