    Most 'Underrated' Aircraft of WW2?

I believe the Do-217 certainly belongs in the top 5 of most under-rated aircraft of WW2.

Italy v. England - Air to air

Your opinion of the AS6 seems rather low. It certainly was a more reliable engine than the Isotta-Fraschini inline and it performed better! The reality is that a great deal of research went into the engine by Fiat and none of that research went into developing a reliable inline military...

Italy v. England - Air to air

And what results they achieved! I think Italy was generally regarded as a technological leader in aviation in the 1930s. It'd be hard to counter that assertion. In 1931 though, the AS6 was a top notch inline engine that could have/should have had an analogous military version yet none ever...

Messerschmitt Me 264 and Heinkel He 277.

Good point. I'll drop any further defense of my assertion regarding manpower in 1943 to keep this thread relatively on topic.

Messerschmitt Me 264 and Heinkel He 277.

Yes, I made the mistake of reading the text and not the specs. I was wrong Civettone. My consideration with respect to the United States and resources spent, my assumption is that the bombers will be escortless and with the radar stations the US would invariably build, they would know...

Italy v. England - Air to air

Yes. I am sure that Italy's lack of industrialization and access to specialized materials wasn't lost on some of Italy's leadership. Italy directly competed for raw materials with Germany and we know who got the lion's share of that! At the time, the AS6 held amazing potential as the...

Messerschmitt Me 264 and Heinkel He 277.

This is a good point but I wonder if it would have made a significant difference for the United States? I had a fantastic book that I'd love to cite on the long lasting impact the first BoB had on the Luftwaffe but I lent it to a friend. I need to get it back. To paraphrase and summarize...

What parts do you disagree with Parmigiano and why?

Messerschmitt Me 264 and Heinkel He 277.

Oops, typo indeed! I meant ME-109. As far as the ME-264 was concerned, only the reconnaissance versions were able to fly such a long range. Bombers would have required in flight refueling, a possibility nixed by Gen. Jeschonnek.

Messerschmitt Me 264 and Heinkel He 277.

As I understand it, the ME-264 was intended to be ditched in the ocean after bombing the US and their crews picked up by submarine. So to beat a dead horse, no escort plans were constructed. As a retort to Civettone, perhaps they didn't need long range escort fighters but the LW probably...

Italy v. England - Air to air

Thanks for the welcome. Friendly lot we have here. :) Other issues that he points out was the mass number of prototypes the Italians produced, with a vast majority of them never seeing production. Again, this is with respect to Italy's limited industrial capacity. It did keep all of...

Do you have favorite WW2 aircraft

I voted for the Ta-152 but my real favorite is the Arsenal VG 33 / Macchi MC 202. They have a very similar design.

Italy v. England - Air to air

Fiat, like Civettone described, had a lukewarm at best disposition to Mussolini's government. They had tested an inline engine that had equivocal output to that of the best radial engines at the time but for reasons unknown, it was dropped. Furthermore, and I'm going to quote a great article...
