B-17's at Pearl Harbor December 1941

MIke, Could he have made an error on the serial number? According to a couple secondary sources, and supported by their AHC's , 40-2074 was the aircraft destroyed at Hickam on 7 Dec 41. 2070 soldiered until it was surveyed at Hendricks Field, Sebring in Jan 43.

B-17's at Pearl Harbor December 1941

Amen to that! It is very much like reading tea leaves... I'm interested in the location of aircraft on 7 Dec 41. The Date section shows the Fiscal Year (started on 1 Jul at that time), and Calendar Month. So a F.Y. of "2" and a C. MO. of "11 or 12" gets me in the ballpark. From there the...

B-17's at Pearl Harbor December 1941

Mike, Most of the sources I've seen say that the 38th Recon Squadron had 4 B-17C & 4 B-17E. I've pulled up the Aircraft History Cards for 40-2059 & 2070 (see attached) and both aircraft are shown as being assigned to "Copper" in December 1941. I've never been able find a clear definition of...

B-17's at Pearl Harbor December 1941

Most people know the story of the twelve B-17s that arrived over Oahu during the attack on 7 December 1941: Can anyone identify the four aircraft that did not take off or returned to Hamilton Field?

    Chinese Training Aircraft 1937-40

According to what I have been able to find: The first Hawk III was delivered in March 1936. Eleven more were delivered between May and July 1936. Sixty more were delivered between May and August 1936. The last thirty were delivered between April and June 1938. For a total of 102 Hawk IIIs...

    Chinese Training Aircraft 1937-40

Thanks to all for their assistance! I think Viking Berserker has identified the aircraft. Now all I need to do is to try and reconcile the numbers provided in "War Wings". In it Guangqiu Xu states that from July 1937 to December 1940 the Shiuchow Aircraft Works (renamed the 1st Aircraft...

    Chinese Training Aircraft 1937-40

Guangqiu Xu, in his book War Wings: the United States and Chinese Military Aviation, 1929-1949, mentions the manufacture of several hundred "Fuxing" training airplanes between July 1937 and December 1940. I can find no other mention of this name, can anyone identify the aircraft in question? I'm...

    Curtiss P-40Es enroute Philippines 8 Dec 41

Buz Thanks!!! I have the same aircraft on the Bloemfontein, I also have a list of the 55 P-40E's that left San Francisco on SS President Polk for the Philippines/Australia (courtesy of the excellent ADF-serials website). The aircraft on the Ludington could not have made it back to the West...

    Curtiss P-40Es enroute Philippines 8 Dec 41

From what I have been able to determine, there were 38 P-40E at sea en route the Philippine Islands when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. Eighteen crated aircraft were on MS Blomfontein, part of the Pensacola Convoy, and twenty were on the USAT Ludington sailing independently. The Pensacola...

    B-17 flight to Oahu 7 Dec 1941

Thanks! That looks like the same information I've been able to locate. Most of the B-17Es delivered by 7 December were either allocated to 7th Bomb Group, or sent to the Material Division, Boeing or Douglas to be used as test/model aircraft. The exception is the four aircraft assigned to the...

    B-17 flight to Oahu 7 Dec 1941

On 6 December 1941, twelve B-17Es (four from the 38th Recon Squadron & eight from the 88th Recon Squadron) were scheduled to depart Hamilton Field for Hickam Field on Oahu. Two B-17Es from the 38th and one from the 88th (41-2411) did not depart, one from the 88th (41-2431) returned to Hamilton...
